What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) raises your monthly SIP by a fixed percentage or amount every year. Most fund houses let you set this once when you start, so the increase happens automatically.
The idea is simple: your salary rises every year, so your investing should too.
Regular SIP vs step-up SIP: an example
Start a ₹10,000 SIP, assume 12% a year, and stay invested for 15 years:
| Plan | You invest | Estimated value |
|---|---|---|
| Regular SIP of ₹10,000 | ₹18,00,000 | ₹50,45,760 |
| Step-up of 5% a year | ₹25,89,428 | ₹65,30,752 |
| Step-up of 10% a year | ₹38,12,698 | ₹86,83,849 |
With a 10% yearly step-up, the SIP reaches ₹37,975 a month in the final year. That is still small next to most salaries after 14 raises.
How this calculator works
- You invest at the start of every month.
- The monthly return is the yearly rate divided by 12, as most Indian SIP calculators use.
- The SIP rises by the step-up percentage once every 12 months.
- Results are before tax, exit loads and changes in expense ratio.
How much should I step up?
Matching your expected raise, often 5–10% a year, is a sensible default. If you start small, a bigger step-up early on makes up a lot of ground. New to SIPs? Start with how to begin investing with ₹500 and SIP vs lump sum.
Questions people ask
What is a step-up SIP?
A SIP whose monthly amount rises by a fixed percentage or rupee amount every year. Fund houses call it step-up or top-up SIP and can automate it.
Is step-up SIP better than a regular SIP?
It is not a different product, just a regular SIP that grows. Because you invest more over time, the final value is higher. The underlying fund and its risks are the same.
What return should I assume for an equity SIP?
Nobody knows future returns. For long-term planning, many people test a range of 8–12% a year. Use the lower end for important goals.
Can I stop or change a step-up SIP later?
Yes. You can usually pause, stop or change a SIP, including its step-up, through your fund house or investment app.
